Ensemble Theatre Cincinnati lit up Over-the-Rhine earlier this month with the highly anticipated opening of “It’s Fritz,” a spirited and soulful production that drew a full house and lively crowd with an electric sense of community pride. The world-premiere production welcomed audiences into an immersive story of a powerful exploration of self-acceptance, shaped by humor, and immediately positioned itself as one of the theatre’s standout works of the season.

“It’s Fritz is based on a book by Zina Camblin, with music and lyrics by Cincinnati’s David Kisor. The play is written with sharp wit and crafted with a musicality that lifts the narrative off the stage as a sequel to its predecessor, “Fiona: The Musical.” The musical follows Fritz, a character whose journey toward embracing his authentic self resonates across generations. Set against a vivid backdrop of family dynamics and creative discovery, “It’s Fritz delivers a story that feels both personal and universal.

Ensemble Theatre’s commitment to new work, as led by producing artistic director and chief executive officer, D. Lynn Meyers, shined through in every element of the production. The production balances whimsical moments with emotional depth, inviting the audience into Fritz’s world with sincerity and style. Scenic and lighting designs enhanced the storytelling, blending nostalgic visual textures with bold contemporary flair. The result is a theatrical landscape that mirrors the internal journey of its protagonist.

It is the cast that truly brings “It’s Fritz” to life. The ensemble delivered layered performances that moved seamlessly between comedy and contemplation. Fritz, brought to life by Troian Butler, played with charm and emotional nuance, commanded the audience’s attention from the first scene. Surrounded by a supporting cast of Bibi, Fritz’s mother, and Tucker Fritz’s father played by Sara Mackie and R. DeAndre Smith (respectively) and Fritz’s side-eye quirky pseudo mentor, Hugh, played by Michael G. Bath, all  infused every interaction with authenticity, the energy onstage became its own conversation.

Moments of laughter erupted frequently, as did moments of thoughtful, collective silence, especially when Montez Jenkins Copeland’s Raffe and TaShauna Ajoi Jenkins’ Zoe take to the stage.

Audience members responded to the show’s comedic timing as eagerly as they absorbed its more introspective themes. The interplay between lightness and depth is part of what made opening weekend so impactful: “It’s Fritz” doesn’t shy away from emotional complexity, yet it embraces joy as a guiding force.

For Ensemble Theatre, this production represents another strong addition to their season lineup while continuing the company’s legacy of elevating fresh, diverse voices and stories that reflect the evolving tapestry of the region.

“It’s Fritz” arrives as a reminder of the vitality, creativity, and community connection that live theatre uniquely provides. Its opening signals not just the launch of a single production, but a celebration of the artists, storytellers, and audiences who make Cincinnati’s cultural ecosystem flourish.

Early reviews and audience reactions suggest that “It’s Fritz” is poised to become one of Ensemble Theatre’s most talked-about productions of the year. With performances continuing throughout the month, the momentum from opening weekend sets the stage for a successful and meaningful run.

With its vibrant storytelling, memorable performances, and community-centered spirit, “It’s Fritz” stands as a joyful reminder of the transformative power of theatre.

There is still time to experience the heart, humor, and introspective brilliance of “It’s Fritz” through Dec. 31, 2025. Tickets are available through Ensemble Theatre’s box office and website
