The GE Rolls-Royce Fighter Engine Team has successfully completed a high-altitude afterburner testing program, a major milestone for the new F136 combat engine.
The F136 is a 40,000+ pound thrust engine that will be used to power all variants of the F-35 aircraft for the militaries of the United States and eight partner nations.
The United States government has already invested more than $2 billion in its development.
The first production F136 engines are expected to be delivered in 2012.
About 800 engineers and technicians are involved in developing the F136 at
GE Aviation's Cincinnati hedquarters and at
Rolls-Royce facilities in Indianapolis and in Bristol, England.
