$2 million Western & Southern grant to improve Barrett Cancer Center

Western & Southern Financial has made a $2 million gift to the University of Cincinnati Foundation to help improve cancer care in Greater Cincinnati. The will help fund a multi-year facility renovation of the UC Barrett Cancer Center at University Hospital.

Western & Southern’s gift will go toward phase-one renovation improvements on the Cancer Center’s first and second floors, scheduled for completion in fall 2009.  It will help to increase clinical examination space by 35 percent to accommodate more patients and large multidisciplinary teams of physicians and support staff who work together to evaluate and develop treatment plans for cancer patients.

"The goal is to provide a clinical environment that allows patients to see multiple members of their care team during the same timeframe at the same location," says Dr. Jeffrey Sussman, director of the surgical oncology division at UC.  "This can minimize some of that emotional stress associated with treatment and simplifies the process."
