University of Cincinnati's College of Medicine and its affiliates attracted more than $130 million in highly competitive National Institutes of Health funding in 2007. Those federal grants were just a piece of the overall $4.8 billion in economic impact the college generated during the year, a new study finds. The college and its affiliates were responsible for more than 55,000 full-time equivalent jobs in Ohio and generated $151.1 million in total state tax revenue, says the study commissioned by the Ohio Council of Medical Deans and conducted by Tripp Umbach, a Pittsburgh-based consulting firm.
The impact was figured by totaling the direct and indirect impact of UC and its 11 core and non-core teaching hospitals. The impact, says Dr. David Stern, dean of the College of Medicine, "is felt not only through tax revenue and job creation, but also through stimulating commerce and encouraging biomedical investment."
