Ethicon Endo-Surgery gets a new family of surgical devices with its acquisition of
SurgRx, a California-based biomedical company. SurgRx developed an advanced bipolar tissue sealing system as part of its family of medical instruments called EnSeal. The acquisition will provide Ethicon Endo-Surgery with a new platform to beef up its line of ultrasonic medical devices that are used in surgical procedures worldwide.
For SurgRx, the deal means its products should get a better exposure through Ethicon's global sales capabilities. "The acquisition has the potential to expand the global availability of the EnSeal product line," said Dr. Rodney Perkins, SurgRx, chairman. Founded in 2002, SurgRx developed the tissue sealing devices, which combine high compression and controlled energy delivery to quickly create strong vessel seals. Cleared by the FDA in 2003, the device can seal vessels up to 7mm in diameter. SurgRx is also developing future products with the goal of reducing operating room time and health care costs.
