Cincinnati's Plastic Moldings Co. was a traditional plastics manufacturer that saw an opportunity in biosciences and decided to expand into making medical devices. The company is one reason Ohio has become a leader in the medical device industry, finds BioEnterprise, a business incubator for the life sciences industry. BioEnterprise took a close look at FDA registration records and found that 625 companies in Ohio have registered with the FDA to make or sell medical devices. That ranked Ohio No. 2 in the Midwest.
Ohio's strong base of manufacturing is the reason the state is ready to lead in the growing life sciences sector, says Baiju R. Shah, president and CEO of BioEnterprise. Manufacturing in Ohio has traditionally been focused on automotive and industrial end markets, but many are redirecting themselves to high-growth markets, including biosciences, BioEnterprise says. "Ohio manufacturers have recognized the economic opportunities in the biosciences and are leveraging their specialized skills in materials and electronics to participate in this growing sector," Shah says.
