Health is a focus of UC's billion-dollar fund-raising campaign

University of Cincinnati's research into cancer, cardiovascular diseases, metabolic diseases and neurosciences will be a major focus of the university's billion-dollar fundraising campaign.  Also expected to benefit from the campaign’s Health in the 21st Century fundraising efforts are research efforts related to trauma, nanomedicine and hearing. UC's colleges of allied health sciences, nursing and pharmacy should also benefit from the campaign’s 21st Century Learning initiative, which will raise money to improve distance and experiential learning, educational tools used by those schools.

Like most large-scale campaigns, UC’s began with a "quiet phase" — a period of fundraising leading up to the Oct. 25 campaign announcement.  UC raised more than $453 million during the quiet period, giving university leaders a strong indication that reaching beyond the original goal of $800 million would be possible.

Key initiatives already supported by gifts given during the quiet phase of the campaign include the Edith J. Crawley Vision Science Research Laboratory, the James L. Winkle College of Pharmacy and the James J. and Joan A. Gardner Center for Parkinson’s Disease and Movement Disorders.

"Health care is a top priority for people everywhere, and UC is in a position to take its top-notch programs and make them even better," says Dr. David Stern, dean of the College of Medicine.
