The National Science Foundation ranks the University of Cincinnati 18th in the US when it comes to federal research expenditures. In 2009, the University reached an all-time funding high, at $378 million.
"This funding, much of which comes from agencies like the National Institutes of Health (NIH) as well as from industry, is translated by UC into a beneficial economic impact for the region and the state in the form of jobs, companies founded and companies assisted," said UC Assistant Director of Public Relations M.B. Reilly.
That's a lot of research and much of that effort has led to job creation and start ups across Greater Cincinnati. And a new effort brings some of UC's top research and entrepreneurial labors into the spotlight with an online Research Virtual Tour.
There are six stops on the tour, outlining a wide variety of products developed though research at UC. Those include a line of first-response robots that can survey disaster areas before humans, and hospital gown prototypes designed to close easier, provide modesty and avoid pressure ulcers.
"The particular projects included in UC's Research Virtual Tour exemplify the ongoing research at the University of Cincinnati that has had a proven or has a strong potential for economic payoff to the region and the state. They also translate well visually," Reilly said.
The tours are through short videos, produced by university videographer and editor Ashley Kempher. And none is longer than two-and-a-half minutes.
"It’s about the economic impact of the research dollars UC earns. Companies are being founded thanks to University of Cincinnati research, and many other companies are being assisted and advanced due to UC’s research strength," Reilly said.
