In today’s economy lots of talented people have trouble finding a satisfying job, or any job for that matter.
That’s why a Colerain Township IT professionally started a web site that takes listeners inside the process of successful job hunts with a weekly podcast.
Daniel Johnson Jr., launched How I Got My Job last November. It features 20- to 30-minute interviews with a host of area professionals in various job sectors. The newly hired include people who work in public relations, talent attraction, health education, web programming, software development, social media and more.
“I ask them, How did you find out about opportunity? Why were you interested in it? How did you prepare for the job interview? … I ask them to take us behind the curtain through that process,” Johnson explained.
Johnson himself lost a lucrative IT job, and was in various stages of employment and unemployment from 2002 to 2004. He now commutes to his job in Dayton where he works for a payroll processing company. He developed How I got my Job to encourage other people to keep looking for work, even when the prospect seems overwhelming.
“If (your) head’s not in the game, how (are you) going to be able to sell (your) skills? I provide encouragement and practical advice. If something I do leads to someone getting a job that’s the benefit from it,” he said.
He’s working on securing a sponsor for the site, so it can continue long term.
Johnson personally knows how difficult it can be searching for the right job.
“I went from a really nice job to survival jobs,” he said “I was unemployed to underemployed. I went from hope to not having hope, and sank into depression.”
The podcast helps people who were like him, and helps them see they can find the right job, he said.
In addition to the podcast, Johnson further dissects the job hunt process at the Get That Job blog.
And For those looking to learn or advance their new media skills, Johnson also holds a monthly New Media Cincinnati meetup, where people come together to talk about podcasting, video podcasting, blogging, micro-blogging, social networking and more.
Johnson said while interviewing successful job seekers, he’s found they posses five commonalities: great communication of their job skills, work adaptability, perseverance, large professional networks, and a touch of moxie.
“They had the right level of go-getterness; something that someone who gets a job needs,” he said.
