Anyone who's ever drained their bank account for an emergency expense, or come into a needed financial windfall knows how emotions play into making decisions about money.
Two local organizations
85 Broads Cincinnati and
Women Writing for a Change are teaming up to offer a series of workshops aimed at helping women push through emotional barriers to making wise financial decisions.
The three-part series, "The Emotion of Money," is a different kind of financial workshop. It doesn't focus on the nuts and bolts of investing, but on emotions like fear and anxiety that can keep women from taking smart risks that can reap financial rewards. For instance, fear of short-term debt can keep many from starting their own potential profitable business.
"Female entrepreneurs have an inordinate amount of fear of debt, and when it comes to the business world, debt is a part of it," said 85 Broads President Margye Solomon.
The Emotion of Money will be lead by professional coach Nan Fischer, who is also program director at Women Writing for a Change. Those interested can take just one class, or all three Solomon said.
"It’s a completely new approach to women and financial literacy. It takes more of a physiological approach to our finances," Solomon said. "We hope many women will be able to take some stress out of their day through this."
Classes start Jan. 25 and are as follows:
January 25: Your Money Style and What Influences Shaped It
February 15: Your Relationship to Money
March 1: Moving into Money Maturity
Classes will be held at the Women Writing for a Change offices, 6906 Plainfield Rd., in Silverton from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Women who complete the series can expect:
- An increased awareness and insight about the role of money in your life
- Greater confidence and competence in dealing with money
- Strategies and tips for developing a healthy relationship with money
- Knowledge to differentiate between net worth and self worth
- A new empowering perspective about money
The cost for members of 85 Broads is $25 per session or $65 for all three. Cost for nonmembers is $30 per session or $80 for all. Register for classes
