UC to open $135M health science research facility

The $135 million University of Cincinnati Center for Academic Research Excellence (CARE)/Crawley Building will officially open on September 10 with a public ribbon-cutting from 1 PM to 3 PM.

San Francisco-based STUDIOS Architecture and Harley Ellis Devereaux were the design-build team for the new 240,000-square-foot research facility, which is connected by a 125-foot glass atrium to the Medical Sciences Building (MSB) at the corner of Eden Avenue and Albert Sabin Way.

Clad in zinc metal panels, brick, glass and aluminum, the new building is meant to be a highly-visible gateway into the university's scientific corridor.

The expansion project is part of a $400 million, five-phased renovation and expansion of MSB that the UC Academic Health Center has deemed necessary to further its mission of education, research, and patient care.

Home to the College of Medicine, the CARE/Crawley Building will house over 20 research departments with 70,000 square feet of laboratories and 17,000 square feet of teaching labs making it one of the largest and most technically advanced health science research complexes in the country.

The new building, which is seeking a LEED Gold rating from the U.S. Green Building Council, also includes:

  • A renovated, multi-floored Donald C. Harrison Health Sciences Library
  • A fitness center
  • A bookstore
  • A food service area
  • Breakout areas for conversation and collaboration
  • Lounges

The Ohio Board of Regents estimates that, upon completion of the MSB renovations in 2013, the facility will generate an additional annual economic impact of $2.26 billion.
