“Negligence” sends powerful message
Artist Waller Austin's solemn exhibit will help raise money for the WhitneyStrong Foundation.
On Sept. 6, Waller Austin was preparing a fun exhibit using Crayola crayons to show a more playful side of the world when his wife, Whitney, was shot 12 times at the Fifth Third Center downtown.
Amazingly, she survived, and both are recovering from the trauma of the mass shooting by keeping busy. Whitney has started the WhitneyStrong Foundation, which, according to the website, will pursue common sense tactics to promote responsible gun ownership with the ultimate goal of reducing gun violence.
Meanwhile, her husband changed his exhibit, now titled “Negligence,” and cast 29 guns out of crayons, one for every day between the shooting and the opening of his exhibit. Currently, it’s in Louisville’s Tim Faulkner Gallery through the end of the month. Part of the proceeds will go to WhitneyStrong.
