Traditional companies such as Procter & Gamble are employing new technologies behind their firewalls, including experiments with social media software.

Last fall, P&G demoed an experimental, Facebook-styled program that would allow networking and information sharing among the company’s thousands of employees.

According to Baseline, the results have been mixed – employees love accessing the knowledge base, but think that keeping their own profiles updated could lead to more work.

P&G employees have tried alternative technologies within the past few years, including web logs, wikis, and profiles on such sites as LinkedIn and Facebook.

Estimates are that this trend will continue, with the market for social computing platforms expected to triple by 2011.
