UC among world’s most innovative universities
Reuters list identifies and ranks the educational institutions doing the most to advance science, invent new technologies and power new markets and industries.
University of Cincinnati is keeping good company earning a #80 ranking on the world’s most innovative universities 2018 list from Reuters. Two other Ohio universities made the list including Ohio State University and Case Western Reserve University.
The Reuters University of Cincinnati profile notes over the years, UC research has led to the first live oral polio vaccine, the first antihistamine, and the first electronic musical organ. Currently, engineers at the University of Cincinnati’s Nanoworld Laboratories are developing high-tech fabrics for the U.S. military that could be used in smarter uniforms. The research, conducted as part of a five-year agreement with the Air Force Research Laboratory, is looking at ways to weave carbon nanotubes into textiles, a feature that would reduce their weight and increase their resilience; the tubes could also be assembled into machines that are part of the fabric, allowing the uniforms to function as sensors or even store energy like a battery to power electronics in a soldier’s equipment loadout.
In fiscal 2017, the university received more than $193 million in 941 sponsored research awards, 87.5 percent of it from federal sources. UC says its economic impact on the state exceeds $4 billion annually.
