UC sled design brings home bronze medal at Sochi Winter Olympics

This past weekend, U.S. Olympian Matt Antoine took the bronze medal in the skeleton competition at the 2014 Winter Olympics. The skeleton sled he used while competing, the ProtoStar V5, was designed by a team led by Grant Schaffner, an assistant professor in UC’s Department of Aerospace Engineering and Engineering Mechanics.

 Ten Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky companies ranked on the "2011 Fortune 500 list." Topping out the local list, Kroger was ranked 25th and Procter & Gamble 26th. Other companies included Macy's, Fifth Third, Omnicare, Ashland Inc., AK Steel Holding Corp, Western & Southern Financial Group, General Cable, and American Financial Group.Read the full story here.

Air Force Base could be economic driver for Cincinnati/Dayton businesses

Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Fairborne has a large economic impact in the Cincinnati/Dayton area and now could be an economic driver for local businesses. Local companies attended a forum in order to gain knowledge about working with the aerospace industry and the federal government. Local companies must be 100 percent committed and knowledgeable in order to be successful and to seek contracts as a base contractor, subcontractor, or service provider. Read the full story here.

Air Force, UC expand medical research

University of Cincinnati signed a six-year contract with the Air Force Research Laboratory, receiving $24 million for medical research. The research includes studying how the medical environment on board airplanes affects the body, treatments for this outcome, and how much oxygen is needed when using an oxygen-concentrated device at higher altitudes. UC hopes to have more research projects under this contract and expand their work with Air Force personnel at Wright-Patterson. Read the full story here.

Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport touted for its free Wi-Fi network

The Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport was one of the first airports nationally to offer Wi-Fi and is one of the few to this day that offers it as a free service thanks to a local young professional movement called Project Lily Pad. While many airports have yet to catch up to Cincinnati's international airport in terms of Wi-Fi service, Project Lily Pad continues to push forward by establishing free Wi-Fi networks all over the city in public places where visitors and residents alike might be interested in hopping on a network. Cincinnati airport rated ‘better than most’

J.D. Powers & Associates has just ranked the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport as one of the best mid-size airports in the country due to a new passenger satisfaction survey. In particular CVG received the highest ratings for food and retail services, accessibility, check-in service, security check, terminal facilities, and baggage claim services.  CVG was compared with 20 other airports nation-wide that serve between 10 million and 30 million passengers annually. Nky’s Life’s Eyes Media to film NASA documentary series

Northern Kentucky's Life's Eyes Media will be filming 'Behind the Webb' - a documentary video podcast about the building of NASA's James Webb Space Telescope.  The contract is the company's biggest contract and is worth more than $10,000. The video series will attempt to explain the building process of the telescope that has been built to find the first galaxies formed in the early universe, connecting the "Big Bang" theory to our Milky Way galaxy. Cincinnati airport among best on-time performers

In a recent study by the Brookings Institution, the Cincinnati-Middletown metropolitan region ranked in the top 20 metro areas for on-time performance with the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport serving as the primary airport. The top 100 largest metro areas were evaluated in the study that ranked Cincinnati at number 20 with an on-time arrival rate of 81.6 percent as of June.  The Cincinnati region was tied with Indianapolis, and ranked ahead of other nearby metropolitan areas like Columbus and Louisville. The study also discovered that twenty-six metro areas account for the majority of delays.  The worst performing metro area is New York-Northern New Jersey-Long Island, while Salt Lake City was the best with 86 percent of its flights arriving on time.
