Sara Cormier of Cormier Creative
How did you start your business?
I have been a freelance graphic designer since my days at the University of Cincinnati (DAAP). And even though I worked at full time gigs after graduating, I always made room for more design on the side. In 2008 I started a partnership with a good friend, but for various reasons we both decided to make a go of it on our own and that is how Cormier Creative started.
I finally made the leap out of the corporate world in April of this year, leaving
Cincinnati Magazine after seven years, and it’s the best thing I’ve ever done. I’m so proud to follow in the footsteps of my father and grandfather by being a successful small business owner!
How did you come up the idea for your business?
The idea is simple. I just do what I love. I love designing, and I love making people happy, so I use my skills to help small businesses, big businesses and individuals. I also love creating custom stationery, so I often work with brides and people planning fabulous parties and events!
What resources here did you take advantage of and how did they help?
My former job as the Advertising Design Manager for Cincinnati Magazine helped by allowing me to get to know lots of business owners and work on projects for them. It became clear to me that there are so many people who can benefit from my services. Of course I believe my top-notch design education from UC is also another reason I am successful.
What inspires you?
What doesn’t? Well, I’m definitely addicted to social media where there is inspiration overload! There are not enough hours in the day for me to see everything I’d like to. Blogs, artwork, my daughter, music... you name it!
What’s next for you and your company?
I wish I knew! There are so many things I’d like to dabble in. One thing is for sure, I’m getting busier every day. I’d like to work with an intern to start, and possibly start growing my business with an employee. It’s so exciting to think about the possibilities!
