Julia Novak of Novak Consulting Group
Julia Novak, founder and CEO of Novak Consulting Group, provides general management consulting (organizational assessment and optimization, strategic planning, organizational development and executive search) for local governments and nonprofit organizations across the country.
How did you start your business?
I spent 16 years in city management before becoming a full-time consultant in 2003. I enjoy the work. In 2009, I had an opportunity to start my own firm that would be mission-driven—“strengthening organizations for those they serve and those that work in them”—and work with people who have a shared commitment to providing quality services.
How did you come up with the idea for your business?
My husband and I had some friends over for dinner and for whatever reason, they ganged up on me and basically dared me to start my own business. At first I kind of blew it off, but a dear friend really pushed me to look into it seriously, so I did. And for the first time, I thought, “Wow…this might be possible.”
What local resources did you take advantage of and how did they help?
Working at home just isn’t for everyone—and in order to grow our company, we needed a place to call home base besides the public library and local coffee shops. Having space in the Hamilton County Business Center provides us an opportunity to be surrounded by creative entrepreneurial people and part of a community that is passionate about growing businesses.
What would you do differently if you started your business again?
I wish I had known about HCBC sooner! This is a great solution for our company—and we are excited to be here.
What’s next for you and your company?
We continue to explore opportunities to grow our market share and serve additional jurisdictions/organizations within the Tri-State region, Ohio and across the country.
