Kim Muhlenkamp, Live Well Chiropractic Center

How did you start your business?
I moved from Nashville where I was an associate doctor. I decided that instead of working for another chiropractor, I wanted to freedom to practice the way I wanted. Although I knew it would be difficult at first, I was confident that the rewards would be greater down the road.

How did you come up the idea for your business?
I wanted my office to be centered on family wellness. I think it’s important to take a proactive role in your own health. By getting adjusted on a regular basis, you are removing stress from the body and the nervous system, allowing it to function better. This is probably most important when a woman is carrying a developing baby. That’s why my practice focuses on expectant moms and children.

What resources here did you take advantage of and how did they help?
I moved here without knowing anybody, so starting from scratch without a patient base and figuring out the best means of advertising was hard. I am -- or was -- a bit introverted, so just getting out of my comfort zone and getting in front of as many people as I could without being self-conscious was important.

I started participating in some networking groups, the most influential being The Business Network (TBN), as well as the Women’s Idea Network (WIN). Also, being involved in Bad Girl Ventures helped me focus on what I needed to do to take my business to the next level.

What inspires you?
Everything. Seeing an expectant mom arrive in pain and leave the office feeling relieved and more comfortable. Decreasing the stress on an expectant mom decreases stress on the baby, too, making the world a happier place!

What’s next for you and your company?
This year, I’m going to expand my team and add a therapist to my staff to do massage as well as help with exercises and stretching.
