Community Shares
is a partnership of 27 local not-for-profit organizations focused on
building social and economic equity while working towards a healthier
natural environment in Greater Cincinnati.
Members work to provide affordable housing to low-income residents,
participate in social justice projects and engage in environmental
sustainability efforts. But rather than work on all these ventures at
once, they primarily work to help raise money on behalf of member
organizations.
"We are working primarily through raising awareness campaigns at local
businesses," says Jeniece Jones, chief executive officer. For example,
Community Shares gives workers an easy way to show support. "We help
employees to donate through payroll deductions."
Jones also aids in development, training and grant writing for member
groups. She works with organizations like Planned Parenthood and local
LGBT groups to gain funding and build their organizations. Community
shares works with all organizations, even if some are considered
controversial.
"We're the non-profit for non-profits," Jones says. "We're similar to
United Way, we're more focused on social justice and the environment."
Community Shares' 16th workplace campaign starts again in August and
partnering businesses will allow them to help their employees set up
plans where they can deduct funds form their paychecks to be redirect to
charities they choose
