Fountain Square is primed and ready to house the third year of eco-friendly sculptures for three weeks.
In honor of Earth Day, The Greater Cincinnati Energy Alliance hosts
EcoSculpt on Fountain Square. All artwork must be made of recycled or recyclable material. Artists have a 10'x10'x10' restriction, and proposals were due March 2. Once the sculptures are approved, the artists have from March 9 to April 13 to build and then install them on the square.
A call was put out to The Art Academy, DAAP and through social media to find artists, which will number around a dozen this year. Past participants have used plastic bottles, cardboard and computer parts to create recycled art.
On April 25, Fountain Square will host an awards ceremony. The top three sculptures, chosen by a panel of judges, and one People's Choice winner, will be announced. The lunch-time event will feature a band and eco-friendly vendors. Throughout the installation, a small eco-friendly house will be on the square to hold a voting booth for the People's Choice award.
"We plan the event around Earth Month, so it brings a lot of field trips and people to Fountain Square," says Christy Samad, Communications Officer for 3CDC.
Ohio Lottery, a new sponsor this year, is commissioning a class from the Art Academy to create a sculpture entirely out of old lottery tickets.
"It's definitely an event for all ages," says Samad. "It's another way to get the community involved on Fountain Square."
