When CEO Bob Coughlin founded Paycor 20 years ago, he believed that the best customer service would build the best company. With that in mind, Paycor assigns one payroll specialist to each account. Rather than join a queue waiting for the first available call center employee, clients speak to the Paycor representative who's best acquainted with their company and its needs.
Paycor employs 325 of its 494 employees at its Cincinnati offices, with plans to add 25 local associates within the next five months of 2010. Not bad during a time when the economy is slowly coming out of a recession. As the business has expanded, from issuing paychecks to a variety of adjacent services like tax compliance and HR functions, the commitment to personalized service has remained.
During a January interview on CET's Financial Beat, Coughlin discussed the importance of new hires in Paycor's software development group. Paycor's technology strategy has carried them into the SaaS (software-as-a-service) market. Their software applications, such as Paycor for Windows, HR Performer, and Time on Demand are integrated. A new hire's information appears in each platform when it's entered in one, saving time and paper files.
Stock options, available to every employee, encourage a culture of employee ownership at Paycor. Three Paycor offices, including Cincinnati, were voted Best Places to Work this year.
The company's community involvement runs ahead of the pack. Coughlin founded the
Flying Pig Marathon in 1998, and credits Paycor employees with much of the Marathon organizing, then and now. A partnership with Oyler School in Lower Price Hill includes Paycor employees as mentors; an auction for the first pitch at a Reds game raised $3,000 for the school. Other charity initiatives include Team in Training cancer research fundraising and Accounting for Kids financial teaching program.
Doing what's right has brought the company positive publicity. In recent months, Cincinnati Business Courier and WCET have featured interviews with Coughlin. Paycor's marketing team won the Marketer of the Year Award - Large Market Category at the Cincinnati AMA's Marketer of the Year event on May 13.
