Cincinnati to host MLB’s third annual Civil Rights Game

Cincinnati has been selected to host Major League Baseball’s (MLB) third annual Civil Rights Game, a June 20, 2009 regular season matchup against the Chicago White Sox.Played for the first two seasons in Memphis, the game pays tribute to an era of significant social change in America and honors baseball’s involvement in helping African American players break through racial barriers.”Cincinnati was the first point for freedom for many people,” Mayor Mark Mallory tells MLB.com.  “The Civil Rights game is an excellent opportunity to continue our ongoing national efforts to advance civil rights.”Two days of events commemorating the Civil Rights Movement, including a panel discussion and banquest honoring the recipients of the third annual MLB Beacon Awards, will lead up to the game.Read the full release here.
