CCM Opera: La bohème
Presented by University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music (CCM) at Corbett Auditiorium, CCM Village Cincinnati, OH
Rent is overdue, but passion burns bright among a group of young friends scraping by on talent, wit and borrowed time. Puccini's soaring arias tell the tale of Mimi, Rodolfo, Marcello and Musetta — dreamers adrift in Paris on the cusp of a new century, where the city is literally reinventing itself. As the first Paris Métro trains rumble beneath, ushering in a breathless age of speed and possibility, life in the garrets above remains unchanged: cold, precarious and lit by the fierce glow of youth. A story that transcends time and place, its message is for the artists, the dreamers, and the everyday people who face challenges but never lose sight of love and connection. LA BOHÈME Music by Giacomo Puccini Libretto by Giuseppe Giacosa and Luigi Illica Jose Maria Condemi, director Aik Khai Pung, conductor This calendar listing is brought to you by Cincy A&E, the Cincinnati region's one-stop, online calendar for arts and entertainment events, powered by ArtsWave.

Comprised of ten songs, it contains everything that’s brought them international acclaim and success since their inception. The current lineup features Parker Cannon (vocals), Kevin Geyer (lead guitar, keys), Ryan Torf (drums, rhythm guitar, and keys) and Will Levy (guitars). When speaking about the record, it’s hard for the band to pinpoint what inspired them in writing its songs, but for the four of them, there was a lot going on both personally and professionally in their lives. “We kind of grew out of our 20s between this record and last” says Torf. “Like a lot of people, you go through so many different things in life and you’re faced with new challenges. As a band, when you go through hardships you realize that some things are more important than music. These can and do take priority over playing, and that can feel divisive. It’s sometimes necessary though, to get to where you want to go.” “We were waiting for all the stars to align for our individual situations,” adds Geyer, “so that this record could be the priority, and that we had the time and space to make…

Same Gesture, Different Century: Rethinking Modernist Performance Practice Through the Microtiming of the Gavotte
Presented by University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music (CCM) at UC-CCM Cincinnati, OH
1:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 30 • Thinking About Music Lecture Series • SAME GESTURE, DIFFERENT CENTURY: RETHINKING MODERNIST PERFORMANCE PRACTICE THROUGH THE MICROTIMING OF THE GAVOTTE Johanna Frymoyer, Assistant Professor of Music Theory Faculty Fellow at the Nanovic Institute for European Studies at University of Notre Dame When modernist composers adapt Classical dance gestures, how do performers shape the timing of those gestures in practice? Do they rely solely on modernist literalism, or do they intuitively draw upon older, embodied dance habits? To explore this problem, Frymoyer presents a comparative microtiming analysis of recorded performances across four gavotte excerpts in Mozart’s K. 284/iii and K. 466/i, and Schoenberg’s Suite, Op. 25/ii and iii. Using interonset-interval (IOI) deviation graphs and contour maps, she establishes an empirical baseline for the gavotte rhythm in Mozart to evaluate how interpreters navigate phrasing and anacrusis shaping in Schoenberg. Ultimately, she challenges the belief that performance practice is strictly period-bound. She argues that embodied dance gesturescreate deeply rooted motoric templates that transcend historical, stylistic and notational divides.
