Rachmaninoff Symphony No. 2
Presented by Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra at Music Hall Cincinnati, OH
The program opens with the constant underlying motor rhythm of American composer Margaret Brouwer’s Pulse. Then, James Ehnes weaves lush, lyrical violin melodies with Scottish folk themes, all before Rachmaninoff’s Symphony No. 2 takes you on a cinematic journey through the depths of the human spirit. Filled with brooding drama, soaring melodies and moments of breathtaking beauty, it’s like a love letter written in sound — one of longing, hope and elation — and remains one of his most beloved works for orchestra. August Wilson's The Piano Lesson
Presented by Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park at Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park Cincinnati, OH
August Wilson’s explosive, award-winning play is a gripping story of family, legacy and the choices that define us. During the Great Depression, Berniece and her brother Boy Willie clash over the fate of the family’s cherished, heirloom piano. Decorated with intricate carvings done by their enslaved ancestor, she treasures the piano’s storied history, and he sees it as the means to a more prosperous life. The ghosts of the past collide with the promise of the future in this Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award-winning masterpiece from August Wilson’s epic American Century Cycle that explores the complexities of identity and belonging. Beyond the Picturesque: The American Landscape as a Site of Memory, Identity, and Continuity
Presented by Taft Museum of Art at Taft Museum of Art Cincinnati, OH
The Taft Museum of Art proudly welcomes Ayana Ross as the 40th Duncanson Artist-in-Residence with a presentation of seven figural paintings. Known for her emotionally resonant portraiture and narrative storytelling, Ross captures the quiet strength and complexity of Black life, reflecting everyday moments that carry deeper meaning. Often drawing on her own experiences, her work explores intergenerational themes, current events, and cultural conversations shaping our world. Through ornamentation, Ross anchors her work in memory, preservation, and continuity. In this collection of paintings, she employs picturesque landscapes as a decorative motif, offering echoes of American ideals, elevating the subjects within her paintings, and inviting viewers to reflect on the world we have inherited and the one we continue to shape.
