Beyond the Picturesque: The American Landscape as a Site of Memory, Identity, and Continuity
Presented by Taft Museum of Art at Taft Museum of Art Cincinnati, OH
The Taft Museum of Art proudly welcomes Ayana Ross as the 40th Duncanson Artist-in-Residence with a presentation of seven figural paintings. Known for her emotionally resonant portraiture and narrative storytelling, Ross captures the quiet strength and complexity of Black life, reflecting everyday moments that carry deeper meaning. Often drawing on her own experiences, her work explores intergenerational themes, current events, and cultural conversations shaping our world. Through ornamentation, Ross anchors her work in memory, preservation, and continuity. In this collection of paintings, she employs picturesque landscapes as a decorative motif, offering echoes of American ideals, elevating the subjects within her paintings, and inviting viewers to reflect on the world we have inherited and the one we continue to shape. Elizabeth Hawes: Radical American Fashion
Presented by Cincinnati Art Museum at Cincinnati Art Museum Cincinnati, OH
Elizabeth Hawes: Radical American Fashion April 24–August 2, 2026 Free Admission Read the Press Release Featuring more than 50 garments made between the 1920s and 1960s as well as original sketches and illustrations, Elizabeth Hawes: Radical American Fashion tells the story of one of the women who helped to shape an American identity within fashion design and personal expression. Elizabeth Hawes was a radical designer, author, and social commentator. She operated her own house in New York from 1928–1940, authored nine books on fashion and its function in society, was at one point blacklisted by the FBI for her progressive socio-political views, and importantly, influenced a generation of American designers who followed her. Largely overlooked by scholars for several decades, this is the first major museum exhibition focused on Hawes’ body of work. Hawes is generally regarded as the first visible and vociferous American couturier. She knew the power of publicity and throughout the 1930s her every move seemed newsworthy. Hawes’ approach to clothing design was to delve into the psyche of the client. She felt that clothing was a direct expression of the self, and that style did not have to follow or be dictated by the fashion industry. She forecasted methods of dress that were not realized until the 1960s or later, including gender neutral designs and an approach to manufacturing that made quality garments more widely available outside the realm of the wealthy elite. This exhibition explores Hawes’ early approach to design and construction and the evolution…

The body isn’t a battery that discharges upon death
Presented by The Carnegie at The Carnegie Covington, KY
Artists: Manami Ishimura, Ian Hersko, Justin Hodges, Jesse Ly, Natalie Lerner and Plume Girl. Set along the Ohio–Kentucky seam, The body isn’t a battery that discharges upon death gathers works attentive to material residue and afterimages. Each piece is an instrument tuned to a minor key that uses monochrome, drone, and repetition to ground the senses. Moving slowly through The Carnegie, visitors encounter extradimensional traces and haunts, but also budding timelines. As the exhibition opens, spring returns to the Ohio River. Honeysuckle reanimates along mortar lines; herons and egrets come back; winter’s grief loosens, settling into compost and feeding the cycle again. There’s a gothic comfort in certain inevitabilities. Presented by The Annex GalleryProgramming supported by 12 Paws Pickle Ball Club. Treasures From the Attic: 250 Years of Fashion & Furniture
Presented by Behringer-Crawford Museum at Behringer-Crawford Museum Covington, KY
Every chair holds the memory of those who sat in it and every garment bears the imprint of the person who wore it. These ordinary objects quietly document how people lived, worked and expressed themselves. Beginning February 14, 2026, visitors can trace these hidden histories in Treasures From the Attic: 250 Years of Fashion & Furniture, on display at Behringer-Crawford Museum through August 9, 2026. Developed in collaboration with Northern Kentucky University’s Public History Program, the exhibition gives students hands-on museum experience while supporting BCM’s collections, education and exhibition work. “The relationship between these students and the museum is invaluable,” said Dr. Brian Hackett, Associate Professor of History at Northern Kentucky University. “Public history students gain real-world experience in collections care, education and exhibition development, while the museum benefits from the energy and skills of emerging professionals. It’s a partnership that strengthens both institutions and serves the community.” Part of the national America 250 commemoration, Treasures From the Attic invites guests to explore how furniture and fashion can serve as windows into the past. Constructed from regional woods or imported textiles, crafted by hand or guided by machinery, used in parlors, bedrooms, factories or fields, these everyday objects reveal innovation, craftsmanship, resilience and changing cultural values across two and a half centuries. Visitors will have the opportunity to slow down and “read” furniture and clothing by looking for clues: tool marks and joinery, screw heads and veneers, seam finishes and fabric choices, silhouettes and construction techniques. These small details offer…

FotoFocus Exhibition: Big Tent
Presented by FotoFocus at FotoFocus Center Cincinnati, OH
The FotoFocus Center is open Thursday and Friday 11am–6pm, and Saturday 11am–5pm, excluding holidays. Please confirm current open hours on the website. Big Tent, the inaugural exhibition at FotoFocus Center, reflects the spirit of the nation and the ideals of FotoFocus, each founded on principles of democracy, creativity, experimentation, and clear-eyed realism. Featuring a diverse ensemble of artists from FotoFocus’ past and future, Big Tent examines the ever-changing nature of American public life within a building created specifically for personal reflection and collective exchange. America is a “big tent,” a place where a broad range of perspectives coexist under one roof. Once a literal tent where grassroots organizing occurred spontaneously across all corners of the nation, the big tent now ascends to metaphor—an impromptu caucus contributing to democracy. Big Tent is inspired in part by a poem by Amanda Gorman, “In This Place (An American Lyric),” written during her time as National Youth Poet Laureate in 2017. Following Gorman’s poem, the exhibition moves through various cities across the United States, where readers encounter book “collections burned and reborn twice,” Confederate statues and protestors “like a meadow of resistance,” the “sleeping giant of Lake Michigan,” cows and floodwaters, and “black and brown students,” culminating in a celebration of the diversity of the American populace.
