LALOVAVI
Presented by Cincinnati Opera at Music Hall Cincinnati, OH
LOVE'S BEACON SHALL SHINE BRIGHT. Set 400 years into the future, Lalovavi (lah-low-VAH-vee) is an Afrofuturist adventure that follows Persephone, the youngest daughter of the ruler of Atlas, the city formerly known as Atlanta. Currency and status in Atlas are determined based on the presence of Syndica, a gene that promotes vitality and longevity. When Persephone is found to possess a version of Syndica that confers immortality, she is betrayed by her family and must run for her life. She is thrust into an epic journey, uncovering a hidden past that leads her to discover love’s true meaning and the power to determine her destiny. Music by Kevin Day Libretto by Tifara Brown Sung in English and Tut* with projected English lyrics and translation The Black Opera Project Lalovavi is the first work in Cincinnati Opera’s groundbreaking, three-opera commissioning initiative, The Black Opera Project, that engages creators to develop new works celebrating Black stories. *Tut is a language that is indigenous to Black Americans and passed down from their enslaved ancestors, who developed Tut as a mechanism for learning how to read and write when it was illegal for them to do so. The title of the opera, “lalovavi,” is the Tut word for “love.” This calendar listing is brought to you by Cincy A&E, the Cincinnati region's one-stop, online calendar for arts and entertainment events, powered by ArtsWave. Mariemont Players Inc. Presents Cabaret
Presented by Mariemont Players, Inc. at Mariemont Players Inc Cincinnati , OH
Willkommen, Bienvenue, Welcome... Step into the decadent, dazzling, and dangerously seductive world of the Kit Kat Klub, where the nightlife of 1930s Berlin comes alive in a provocative swirl of glitter and grit. Based on the gritty 1998 Broadway revival, Cabaret tells the powerful story of a city teetering on the edge of darkness. As the ominous shadow of the Nazi party rises, an eccentric cast of characters—including the radical Emcee, American writer Cliff Bradshaw, and the British cabaret singer Sally Bowles—navigates a changing world through love, politics, and survival. Featuring an unforgettable score by Kander and Ebb, provocative themes, and stunning choreography, this iconic masterpiece explores humanity’s resilience and denial in the face of rising uncertainty. Directed by Angelo Cerniglia, Cabaret is a thrilling, heartbreaking, and unforgettable theatrical experience that promises to move audiences like never before. Leave your troubles outside—at the Kit Kat Klub, life is beautiful. But for how long?
