An Exertion: Performance by Elan Schwartz

Elan Schwartz uses repetitive physical actions and ritual to explore and process anger—an emotion that can feel difficult to hold or express in response to the “The Body Isn’t a Battery That Discharges Upon Death” exhibition. This work reflects a personal process while also extending an invitation for others to reflect on their own emotional experiences. By making this effort public, the piece encourages us to consider ideas of “appropriateness,” who has access to private space for emotional processing, and how we practice both self-care and collective care.
