Special Feature– Tamary Kudita: African Victorian and Birds of Paradise
Presented by Cincinnati Art Museum at Cincinnati Art Museum Cincinnati, OH
May 3, 2025–April 5, 2026 Gallery 104 Free admission Friends of Photography Tamary Kudita (b. 1994) makes photographs that examine African identity in relation to the social and historical forces that frame individuals’ lives. Kudita lives and works in Zimbabwe, a country formerly colonized by Great Britain. She traces her family heritage to the Shona-speaking people of Zimbabwe and to a nineteenth-century union between a Black South African plantation worker and a Dutch soldier. Mixing cultural signifiers across centuries and continents, Kudita’s portraits make the hybrid nature of African identities visible while giving everyday Zimbabweans their due. This special feature is made possible by the Private Collection of Lesley Goldwasser and Jonathan Plutzik, with thanks to VISU Contemporary art gallery. Accessing the Exhibition This first-floor exhibition has an accessible pathway. Seating is provided within the exhibition gallery. Labels optimized for screen reader are available online. Embodied Book Club - April 5th
Presented by The Well at The Well Cincinnati, OH
Join The Well in their Walnut Hills space for a free book club. Meet for an approachable dive into a book, discussing a highlighted and provided selection (in case you can't read the entire book) while also learning and exploring somatic practices inspired by the book. For our fourth session, author Rob Dorgan will be presenting his novel Awakening the Mystic: A Novel of Cosmic Love and Healing. Yoga teacher Ren Devlin’s life is forever changed after he performs what the world proclaims to be a “miracle” in front of hundreds of shocked onlookers. Lauded as a spiritual healer, Ren is thrust into the limelight, along with his beloved life partner, Sean. Ren seeks answers through deep meditation, during which he encounters his “council”—the gods and goddesses of the zodiac—who steer him down a path of spiritual healing. To find peace, Ren must face the negative views that his childhood religion of Catholicism has toward the LGBTQ+ community and women, battle his own ego, and come to terms with his fear of death and being alone without Sean. Awakening the Mystic is an exploration of higher consciousness, the practice of yoga and meditation, and a journey to discover what love and healing really mean. Rembrandt: Masterpieces in Black and White
Presented by Taft Museum of Art at Taft Museum of Art Cincinnati, OH
The innovation, creativity, and influence of Rembrandt (Dutch, 1606–1669) are evident not only in his paintings but also in the more than 300 etchings he made during his career. At a time when most saw etching primarily as a vehicle to reproduce famous works of art, Rembrandt utilized the medium to create groundbreaking compositions. Filled with delicate lines and velvety shadows, his etchings often achieve the psychological intensity of his oil paintings. Nearly fifty works in Rembrandt: Masterpieces in Black and White present the depth and breadth of Rembrandt’s etching subjects, including portraits, self-portraits, scenes from daily life, landscapes, narrative scenes, and still lifes. A select group of etchings by Rembrandt’s contemporaries, as well as later admirers including James McNeill Whistler and Pablo Picasso, demonstrate the Dutch master’s enduring influence. Organized by the American Federation of Arts, this exhibition shares rarely seen etchings collected by the Rembrandt House Museum, the artist’s former home and studio in Amsterdam. This project is supported by the generosity of tens of thousands of contributors to the annual ArtsWave Campaign, the Cincinnati region's primary source for arts funding.
