As a child, she was often homeless, abused, and neglected. And while she managed to pay her way though college and medical school, she’s still guided by her childhood.

In a recent editorial, Glamour highlighted her past and the work she’s done as the director of the Department of Health, calling her “The Pandemic’s Most Midwestern Hero.”
