Hebrew Union College to stay open

Financial pressures led the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion, the nation’s oldest institution for training rabbis, cantors and educators of Reform Judaism, to consider the option of closing one or more of its three U.S. campuses. School officials have now announced that its board of governors adopted a move to overhaul operations with the help of technology and innovation that will save the New York, Los Angeles and Cincinnati campuses. “This is a big, big victory for Cincinnati and the state of Ohio,” said Dick Weiland, a lobbyist and former member of the school’s advisory board.  The Hebrew Union College was founded in Cincinnati in 1875 and was the first location.  The campus has roughly 100 students at its Clifton campus.
