Many Newport residences pride themselves on their gardens. In 1999, Garden Design magazine even proclaimed that Newport, Kentucky has become synonymous with "great gardens."
Many East Row residences boast iron fences that neatly accentuate the lush garden spaces. And on June 27-28 you can check out nine of these gardens on the 13th Annual Garden Walk.
The Garden Walk is one of the region's most popular garden tours and it takes place right in the heart of historic Newport. The 2009 East Row Garden Walk will go from 10am to 4pm on Saturday and Sunday in the second largest local historic district in Kentucky.
During the walk visitors will be able to view the gardens that were chosen based upon their distinctive creativity, design and use of plant materials. Seven of the nine gardens have never been open to the public before.
Tickets will be $15 per person (children under 12 are free with an adult) and sold at the exhibitor area until 3pm at the Watertower Square parking lot located at 6th and Washington streets. Advance tickets can be purchased at the Kentucky Haus (411 E. 10th Street) or by calling (859) 261-4287.
A relaxation area offering complimentary bottled water and restrooms will be available along the tour route at one of the historic homes. Proceeds will go to benefit the Henry Hosea House and towards beautification projects for the neighborhood and the city of Newport.
