Cincinnati, Detroit selected as final health IT pilot communities under innovative HHS Recovery Act

The new Beacon Community Program, a program that focuses on improving health problems in communities across the nation, chose HealthBridge Inc. in Cincinnati to participate in a pilot project. This will create dozens of new jobs while developing a nationwide health IT infrastructure. HealthBridge will serve the Cincinnati area by working to improve quality and care coordination for patients.

Cincinnati makes 'unofficial' short list for new Google Fiber network

Cincinnati is one of the cities on the 'unofficial' short list for the new Google Fiber network that will create a test fiber optics network in one city with speeds 100 times faster than any existing internet connection.

In a contest sponsored by GoogleFiber.com (no affiliation with Google.com), the cities that made the short list are now options in a national voting competition to see which city is most deserving, or most excited about the prospects of the super-fast network in their community.  Cincinnati currently stands in the middle of the pack, but votes can be cast daily on Google Fiber's web page.  The page and contest are not associated with Google, and will have no impact on the search engine giant's decision on where to host the network.

St. Elizabeth Healthcare makes transition to electronic medical record system

Northern Kentucky-based St. Elizabeth Healthcare made a huge announcement when they said they would transition from a paper-based medical record system to an electronic system intended to improve efficiencies and reduce waste.

With the transition to the new system called Epic, St. Elizabeth becomes the first network in the Cincinnati area to standardize their electronic records in multiple physician offices, off-site locations and the network's hospitals.

CrowdGather buys UC student's website for $1 Million

UC student Phil Santoro recently sold the website he created, Freeforums.org, to CrowdGather for $1 Million. Santoro's three-year-old site lets anybody set up an online forum and claims to have the "largest community among free forum hosts."

Cincinnati launches economic development website

The City of Cincinnati has launched a new economic development website aimed at attracting new business and jobs.  The new site focuses on providing timely information relevant to site selectors and developers who might be interested in the city.

The new website is seen as a "huge step forward" in terms of how the city communicates with the economic development community.  Cincinnati leaders are looking for the site to attract new investors and additional jobs to the region.

Laptop TV connecting players straight to fans

The increasing use of social media combined with mobile laptop devices has made for a new direct connection between fans and their favorite athletes and celebrities.  One such athlete that has been taking full advantage of this technology has been Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Chad Ochocinco.

"It lets people see who I am really, and not what the media portrays me to be," says Ochocinco.  "You can actually see the real Chad and see the things that I do, some of the things I like and actually interact with me and talk back and forth."

Companies across the nation, like Cincinnati-based IT firm Lucrum, are beginning to use the power of social media to recruit new talent and cut the high administrative costs often associated with talent attraction.

Lucrum employs 100 people and had 2008 sales of $15 million.  David Bowman, director of marketing, says that the new approach "can give you deeper insight into a potential candidate," but also warns that the use of social media is "no magic bullet" as face-to-face interaction and communication skills still need to be examined.

NKy CVB Offers Meetings2GO

The Northern Kentucky Convention & Visitors Bureau debuted Meetings2GO earlier this year which offered a mobile meeting software program designed for real-time text programming in cell phones and PDAs.

The innovative meeting feature is used for a variety of reasons that include the reduction of production costs and increased flexibility for those looking to take part in the meeting.

Bengal quarterback helping players develop iPhone Apps

Fellow Cincinnati Bengal teammate, backup quarterback and younger brother of QB Carson Palmer, Jordan Palmer, is working on a business venture that is helping other professional athletes develop their social networks in a personalized way.

Jordan Palmer spent the offseason working on the business venture with two California friends.  The end result has been the development of individualized iPhone applications for athletes - allowing them to connect with their fans on the go.

Some of their early clients include Jets' quarterback Mark Sanchez and Bengals' wide receiver Chad Ochocinco.

Cincy Tech funding yields impressive results

Zipscene got a great jump start in 2007 from an investment made by CincyTech which is a partnership of local corporations, research institutions and the Cincinnati USA Regional Chamber with the goal of commercializing entrepreneurial ideas.

Zipscene started out with just an idea and have since grown to a company serving 25 cities nationwide with a few dozen employees and a headquarters in the Cincinnati neighborhood of Walnut Hills.

Zipscene was one of ten companies funded in part by CincyTech with dollars coming through Ohio's Third Frontier program.

Cincinnati data center grand opening attracts more than 200 business leaders

Peak 10 opened their new data center in Cincinnati and opened it up, at a grand opening event, to local business and thought leaders so that they could tour the enterprise class facility.

The turnout was so good that it surpassed Peak 10's expectations and further encourages the company about the Cincinnati market where they have already seen steady customer growth.

Attendees were able to tour the first-class facility that boasts 24x7 customer access, biometric, card and PIN protected access, redundant network infrastructure, multiple UPS systems and backup generators and redundant Tier-1 access.

P&G named among InfoWorld's Green 15

Procter & Gamble has been named as one of International Data Group's InfoWorld's Green 15 for its success in reducing travel through the adoption and implementation of its Video Collaboration Studios (VCS).

P&G began deploying the VCS technology across its global network in October 2007 with the goal of implementing 43 studios in just nine months; Today, there are more than 50 studios up and running.

It's estimated that, between July 2008 and December 2008, VCS helped P&G eliminate 6,000 international flights - the equivalent of taking 3,000 cars off the road for a year.

The InfoWorld Green 15 awards, published on InfoWorld.com, recognize the 15 most innovative IT initiatives that fall under the umbrella of sustainability.

RTM Consulting has introduced an innovative modular cirriculum for IT consultants that utilizes customized case studies to teach them more effective client-facing skills, while also training them on how to identify and grow revenue generating opportunities.
