Soapicks March 3-9

March is in full swing so get rolling with it by venturing out for this week’s kick-off events. Come check out The Art of Food, an exhibit which turns foods into artistic creations. It’s time once again for Bockfest, which marks the end of the winter brewing and the beginning of spring in the beer world. Then check out the Third Annual Cincinnati Directors Competition and see stage directors going head-to-head for who’s the best in show.

Delectable Art
March 6
If you thought it was hard to refrain from touching statues at the museum, try not taking a bite out of The Carnegie’s latest exhibit. The Art of Food is a collaboration of the area’s culinary masters and local artists who have joined forces to create an art exhibit in which food is both the inspiration and the pallet. This limited time exhibit-two weeks only-goes way beyond the cake decorating contests on the Food Network; these unique works of art transform foods into a true sensory experience. Join culinary artists from exquisite restaurants JeanRo and Via Vita along with exhibiting artists Eric Brass, Randel Plowman and many more from both. The exhibit opens with the Grand Event this Friday where the elaborate creations and sculptures will be unveiled. Exhibit continues through March 20. Click here for opening reception tickets.

Bockin’ in the Spring
March 6-8
It’s time to separate the true Cincinnatians from those of us just living here. What is Bock and what does it mark the beginning of? If you answered that Bock is a type of rich, complex robust lager and its brewing marks the end of the winter brewing season and the beginning of spring, then you’re as Cincinnati as they come. Bockfest 2009 is continuing a long tradition of greatness-the oldest in the world to be exact-this weekend with three days of Bock beer, Prohibition Resistance Tours, parades, music and much, much more. Take the free shuttle between participating bars Mr. Pitifuls, Milton’s, Grammer’s, Below Zero, Courtyard Cafe and Arnold’s to ensure you experience all that Bock fest has to offer. Get a full schedule of events here and come welcome in spring with a frothy lager.

So You Think You Can Direct?
March 6-8
If you’re already tired of Simon Cowell and the American Idol antics, join directors from Cincinnati theaters this weekend for a competition of a different nature. Stage directors are taking off the gloves to present their best 30-minute pieces for the Third Annual Cincinnati Directors Competition. The Columbian Performance Center will host the weekend’s competition which features six different directors who’ve put together six different short-shows, that as an audience member, you’ll get to vote on! The competition ends Sunday with the top winners of the previous two nights squaring off for a final show down of who’s got more directorial skill.  Buy a weekend pass here and don’t miss the theatrical competition of the year.
